More than 800 killed after Afghanistan e
In the remote mountains of eastern
Afghanistan, the desperate rush to
rescue after an earthquake struck
overnight. The injured look bewildered
and exhausted. Evacuated here by
helicopter in Kunar Province. This the
grimace of a survivor surrounded by
those who've seen their villages
destroyed.
>> Here some of the devastation left
behind. Many homes made of mud and stone
leveled.
The sound of despair amidst the hurried
search for signs of life.
These areas were already hard to reach.
People and information difficult to
access. And now they have landslides to
contend with.
Almost the entire village has collapsed.
The earthquake struck at midnight.
Children are trapped under the rubble.
The elderly are under the rubble. Young
people are under the rubble. We need
help here. We need people to come and
help us pull out those buried beneath
the debris. Our children, the elderly
and women are under the rubble. There's
no one who can come to recover the dead
bodies.
>> Afghanistan is no stranger to deadly
earthquakes, but this one was
particularly shallow. The damage
therefore deeper. The death toll
expected to rise.
It is a brutal shock for a country
already suffering from aid cuts, drought
and hunger. Cordelia Lynch, Sky News.
